George King,
Newington CT
Modern Concrete Pumping, Inc.
Biography
Born in
VT, George was one of eight children.
His family worked hard and grew close as they all chipped in to help
with the chores to run their farm. This work ethic carried over throughout
the years to help George build his company and become successful.
After
turning 18, George moved to CT. He continued with his work ethic and began
working for his brother laying tile and then he worked as a mechanic for JI
Case. While George worked there, JI
Case started to sell concrete pumps. He thought this was a good niche market
to get into, so began strategizing how to start a concrete pump business.
In 1966
George King and his partner started Modern Concrete Pumping, Inc. and they
were located in West Hartford, CT. They started with an I35 pump and they
were the only concrete pumping company in the state.
Shortly after starting the company, Modern had five employees, a
couple of case trailer pumps, and a 50′ reach boom that was the talk of the
industry at the time.
Three months later the business grew more and they bought four more
pumps.
Over the past 49 years Modern has grown in
size and reputation. The company is now located in
Newington,
CT, servicing the New
England and eastern NY area. Jobs include state, commercial, or
residential construction.
George was well known in CT,
NY, MA, VT, and NH. When he
entered a room people know him, came over and shook his hand. He was a
valuable asset to the concrete pumping industry. Customers called him often
for advice, encouragement and to laugh.
"George King has
been a pioneer in the pumping industry since I started at O&G
thirty seven years ago.
He was always available to look at sites to offer suggestions for
size, positioning, and hourly pumping capacities. He was a source of information for mix designs to everyone including
architects and engineers. In
addition, George was a comical addition to any conversation with his ability
to drop a one liner and bring down the house. He was truly one of a kind.”
- Leo Nardi, Assistant Vice President, O&G
Industries.
George’s son, Marcus has been working along side him for the past 25 years. Marcus explains, “My father was a hard working man, who loved to help
people. He was highly respected and well known in this industry. He has been
pumping for almost half a century. It’s been an honor to work side by side
with him for the last 25 years, making memories for many lifetimes.”
